WVU nursing faculty publish new edition of key nursing ethics text

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A new edition of Ethics & Issues in Contemporary Nursing, co-authored by West Virginia University’s Dr. Alvita Nathaniel and Dr. Peggy Burkhardt, is now available, continuing its role as a leading resource in nursing ethics education.

Both professors emerita at the WVU School of Nursing, Dr. Nathaniel and Dr. Burkhardt have pulled from decades of experience as family nurse practitioners and educators.

Since its original release in 1997, the book has provided real-life ethical case studies, many inspired by the authors' experiences in West Virginia.

WVU faculty members contributed to the first edition, published in 1997, including Barbara Banonis (now deceased), Mary Jo Butler, Sandra Cotton, and Sr. Barbara Kupchak. Additionally, the WVU DNP graduate featured as an exemplar of an empowered nurse is Dr. Aaron Santmyire.

Previously named to Doody's Core Titles list, this 6th edition introduces a chapter on a WVU Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) graduate, reflecting the university's influence in nursing practice and ethics.

"We’re proud that our work supports future nurses in facing ethical challenges," said Dr. Nathaniel.

Published by Elsevier, the book is available on Amazon and through academic booksellers.
