WVU Nursing students participate in Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two West Virginia University School of Nursing students—Serenity McDill and Nathaniel Palmer—presented posters Feb. 18 during the Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol.

The event offered lawmakers a glimpse of the work of undergraduate researchers at WVU and across the state. Nearly 50 presenters from WVU’s Morgantown and Beckley campuses attended.

Nathanial Palmer presented “Satisfaction with Access to Health Services in West Virginia during COVID-19" during Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol.

“At Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol, students get the opportunity to share cutting edge research, technology and scholarship with West Virginia legislators, supporting our land grant mission to the state,” Amy Hessl, director of the WVU Office of Undergraduate Research.

Palmer’s presentation was “Satisfaction with Access to Health Services in West Virginia during COVID-19,” while McDill presented, “Identifying Home Care Needs of Families Living with Heart Failure and Vascular Dementia.” Both Palmer and McDill are members of the Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Serenity McDill presented “Identifying Home Care Needs of Families Living with Heart Failure and Vascular Dementia" during Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol.

A number of lawmakers and interested attendees stopped by their posters to ask questions about their research.

“Serenity and Nathaniel have been instrumental in our research at the School of Nursing,” said assistant professor Trisha M. Petitte. “They have learned about research and scholarly methods and have had the opportunity to apply them to our ongoing research efforts. They were able to present these accomplishments to the legislature during the Undergraduate Research Day.”
