WVU School of Nursing welcomes faculty and student projects during Research Week 2023

The WVU School of Nursing displayed manuscripts, posters and more in the 6500 Wing during Research Week 2023, highlighting scholarly work from faculty and students across the school.

The research display included 21 research manuscripts from 48 faculty members; 16 scholarship papers, including book chapters, education and clinical articles from 40 faculty members; and 14 abstracts for presentations, both oral and posters, from 40 faculty members. Additionally, 24 students were involved across these projects.

“Research is important for nursing students, so they have the skills needed to improve health care practices based on data or evidence collected in rigorous methods,” said Dr. Ubolrat “Diu” Piamjariyakul, Associate Dean for Research.

“Nursing education provides students with experience to be excellent observers of the impact of a variety of heath care on individuals, families and communities. Thus, research education includes identifying health care challenges, testing of new health care approaches or policies and learning how to conduct a variety of studies,” Piamjariyakul said. “Participation in the research process provides students with hands-on research experience, opportunities to learn collaborative skills, and dissemination of study findings.”

Piamjariyakul said the participation of the WVU School of Nursing during Research Week demonstrated a strong commitment to the nursing profession, to collaboration and to improving health outcomes.

“This commitment has led to interdisciplinary research teams, publication of findings, textbooks and clinical guidelines, and National Institutions of Health research funding to the School of Nursing,” she said. “Faculty participation and student engagement in testing nursing interventions have been shown to improve health outcomes of patients, family caregivers, and community health care. In addition, strong participation from the School of Nursing is a showcase of collaboration among nurse researchers, educators, and clinicians to promote translational research.”
