The mission of the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center Graduate Student Organization (GSO) is to represent and support the interests of the University’s current and future health sciences graduate student community by providing scholarly activities and offering leadership, service, and social opportunities. The HSC GSO exists to enrich the experience of the University’s graduate students and aims to accomplish these objectives by responding to the changing collective needs of our primary constituents.

Functions of the HSC GSO

  • Advocate the position of the graduate student body to other University and external constituencies
  • Represent the broad interests of graduate students to the University’s academic units through a network of departmental delegates
  • Furnish accessible, reliable, and valuable information, services, and programs to current and prospective graduate students
  • Provide a forum that will facilitate and encourage opportunities for interaction and networking among a diverse graduate student population from WVU and other Universities
  • Seek funding to support organizational activities
  • Address the constructive feedback of the WVU faculty
  • Promote a sense of community among graduate students and their families

Outreach Committee

Our outreach committee works hard to provide opportunities throughout the Morgantown area such as:

  • Science Fairs at elementary, middle, and/or high schools
  • Forums to support the education of STEM teachers
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Volunteer at homeless shelters and animal shelters
  • Food drives and donations to local charities
  • Participation in events held by organizations supporting research (Relay for Life, Heart Walk, etc.)

Our social committee works hard to provide social opportunities such as:

Fundraising Committee

Our fundraising committee works hard to financially sponsor academic opportunities such as:

  • Professional Development seminars
  • Career Services
  • Networking events
  • Food/supply drives
  • STEM related activities for local schools

Highlights

  • Facilitated a Conference Poster Workshop featuring graduate student guest speakers designed to support all undergraduate and graduate WVU students in presenting their research findings
  • Volunteered at the Morgantown Public Library for Brains and Books and Saturday morning readings
  • Participated in the annual Relay for Life event
  • Hosted the inaugural STEM Semi-Formal event, bringing together graduate students across campus
