Office of Laboratory Animal Resources

Overview

The Office of Lab Animal Resources (OLAR) provides veterinary and husbandry care to animals used in biomedical research and teaching across the WVU campus. The biomedical program at WVU is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), and the Attending Veterinarian is a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. The health sciences campus maintains two centrally managed vivarium
spaces at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center (~21,000 ft 2 ) and Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (~6,000 ft 2 ). The vivarium is able to accommodate rodent and rabbit species. The facility offers a rodent barrier facility, high containment facility (BSL-3/ABSL-3), fully equipped surgical spaces, and ABSL-2 animal housing. The animal housing is located near core facilities for imaging and behavior.
OLAR provides additional research support services including procedure training, import/export coordination, and anesthesia/surgical assistance.
